May 9, 2016 · Lucky, successful Pete Duel rose up from the bed he shared with his girlfriend on the night of December 31, 1971, walked naked into the front room of his house, and shot [himself]. For a man who was so anxious to abandon his life, he had accomplished a great deal in the few years he lived.
Duel's death was later ruled a suicide. Duel's funeral was held at the Self-Realization Fellowship Temple on January 2, 1972, in Pacific Palisades. At the service, his girlfriend Dianne Ray read a poem he wrote, titled "Love". An estimated 1,000 friends and fans attended.
