Richard Gordon Heath Holmes, OBE, FRSL, FBA (born 5 November 1945) is a British author and academic best known for his biographical studies of major figures of British and French Romanticism.
Born in London in 1945, Richard Holmes has written ten biographies and books of biographical essays. Even in his early works Shelley (1974) and Coleridge: Early Visions (1989), Holmes demonstrates a keen eye for place and a striking empathy for his subjects.
Indeed, Holmes is now widely recognised as the foremost biographer of the English Romantic poets, beginning with Shelley: The Pursuit (1974) and culminating in his magisterial prize-winning two-volume biography of Samuel Taylor Coleridge.
