Oct 9, 1990 · Detective Russell Kuster was shot and killed when he attempted to stop a man who was waving a handgun in a restaurant. The suspect had gotten into an argument with the owner and left. The man re-entered the bar with a 9 mm handgun and started waving it in the air.
Russ was my partner for many years, then became my D3 Supervisor at Hwd Detectives Homicide Unit. Below is a memorial I wrote for him, which was read at his funeral. (I had been retired for four years from LAPD at the time of his murder.) Los Angeles Police Department. Hollywood Detectives.

On June 18,1990 I entered the Los Angeles Poice Department after having just been honorably discharged from the United States Marine Corps in April. I never had the opportunity to meet you in person but I will always remember your name due to the fact that you were the first LAPD Officer to lose his life during my career.
