The Jackson State University Program is world renowned, steeped in lustrous history and rich traditions. The most visible ensemble is the famous “Sonic Boom of the South” however, we boast several other ensembles including the Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band & Concert Band.
During this period, the famous JSU “Sonic Boom of the South” Marching Band received numerous awards and citations including national coverage in Jet Magazine, the Christian Science Monitor, and People Magazine.
The Jackson State University Marching Band was dubbed The Sonic Boom of the South in 1971 by students in the band. In 1974, the band’s theme, “Get Ready,” an old Motown favorite was selected and three years after that, the “Tiger Run-On” was perfected.
The Sonic Boom of the South is the marching band of Jackson State University (JSU) located in Jackson, Mississippi, US. Its unique style and showmanship include the J5 drum majors, Prancing J-Settes, floating JSU, Tiger Run-On, the “Get Ready” entrance, and “The Series.”
