Steven James Grogan (born July 24, 1953) is an American former football quarterback who played in the National Football League (NFL) for sixteen seasons with the New England Patriots. He played college football for the Kansas State Wildcats and was selected by the Patriots in the fifth round of the 1975 NFL Draft .
The only man in the nfl with a longer neck than Payton manning. Guy had a neck like a giraffe! That neck roll belongs in Canton. i loved him as a kid. Grogan, from a technical, analytical standpoint, wasn't all that great, but his toughness was off the charts. He put on a whiplash collar.
The real reason other than being a badass: Grogan had neck surgery in January of 1989 to remove a herniated disc and alleviate a pinched nerve. The photo is probably from the 1989 season that fall. Grogan was a great quarterback, who got the s**t beat out of him early in his career.

Anybody know the history of the “neck roll”. I’m making up that term for it, so correct me if there’s an official name. I’m talking about the white tubular pad that would go around a player’s neck.
