Swing Shift is about women who find friendship and empowerment while working at an aircraft factory during World War II. Hawn plays Kay, who is a homemaker happily married to Jack (Ed Harris).
A woman finds romance when she takes a job at an aircraft plant to help make ends meet after her husband goes off to war. Jack and Kay Walsh are typical of many couples of the 1940s, where he is the breadwinner and she the housewife dependent upon him to do the man's duties around the house.
In 1941 America, Kay and her husband are happy enough until he enlists after Pearl Harbor. Against his wishes, his wife takes a job at the local aircraft plant where she meets Hazel, the singer from across the way the two soon become firm friends and with the other girls become increasingly expert workers.
