Sammy, a 10-year-old boy pretends to be a deaf mute after his mother abandons him at the Barrington, Georgia, bus station. There, he spends twenty-six years in secret silence, realizing the benefits of pretending he cannot hear or speak.
Manipulative and corrupt Tolliver is finally put on trial for one of his many misdeeds. Sammy naturally has heard all the plots and schemes all along, but Tolliver and his cohorts never suspect that Sammy is aware of their plans.
