The story's setup is more entertaining than the payoff; as Hitchcock observed, suspense plays better than action. But the film delivers--right up until a final moment I'll get to later.

When their red Jeep with Massachusetts plates ventures into no man's land, Jeff Taylor (Kurt Russell) and his wife, Amy (Kathleen Quinlan), become targets of a mysterious plot. Mostow can't make this believable, but he sure can make it pack a punch. Russell, who makes a fit and handsome action hero, first turns up in chinos and a lavender shirt.
