For many students with disabilities—and for many without—the key to success in the classroom lies in having appropriate adaptations, accommodations, and modifications made to the instruction and other classroom activities.
- Presentation Accommodations. For this type of student accommodation, the focus is on how teachers present information to their students. If a student utilizes materials with many illustrations, graphs, or infographics, that student can share them in class via a digital menu or handout on the computer.
- Response Accommodations. This accommodation category highlights how students can change their methods for completing tests and assignments. In this case, school administrators may implement policies that don't limit how students respond to their teachers.
- Timing Accommodations. As crucial as ensuring that students follow a strict schedule in all classes to achieve the standard curriculum requirements, giving allowances for learning style differences is also vital.
- Environment Accommodations. Students can learn more effectively in an environment conducive to learning. So, when providing environmental accommodations for students with disabilities, teachers may adjust the setting or space in such a way that all students can effectively complete their learning tasks.
- Minimize Distances Traveled. Students with physical disabilities may find it difficult to travel between spaces in the classroom. To minimize travel distances for students with disabilities, ensure there is ample open space between workstations that allows ease of access to all areas of the classroom.
- Make the Whole Classroom Accessible. ADVERTISEMENT. Mobility does not simply involve access between the student’s desk and the door to the classroom. Seating a student with a disability by the door or placing them at a separate desk may appear convenient and easy.
- Make All Materials Accessible. It is not always possible to place all materials at accessible heights and locations. However, I focus on placing the most commonly utilized classroom materials in the most accessible spaces.
- Think About Lesson Transitions. Lesson transitions are often a pivotal moment in which a student’s physical disability must be treated with sensitivity.
