  1. Aug 7, 2023 · The cornea is the outermost, clear layer of the eye, immediately anterior to the anterior chamber, iris, and pupil. The cornea borders the sclera at the corneal limbus and is involved in the refraction of light entering the human eye.

The cornea is the clear front surface of the eye. It lies directly in front of the iris and pupil, and it allows light to enter the eye. Viewed from the front of the eye, the cornea appears slightly wider than it is tall. This is because the sclera (the "white" of the eye)slightly overlaps the top and bottom of the anterior cornea. The horizontal d...

As already mentioned, the clear cornea allows light to enter the eye for vision. But it has another very important function as well — the cornea provides approximately 65 to 75 percent of the focusing power of the eye. The remainder of the focusing power of the eye is provided by the crystalline lens, located directly behind the pupil. Most refract...

A number of conditions can affect the cornea. Among the more common corneal problems are: Arcus senilis. As people get older, a white ring often develops in the periphery of the cornea. This is called arcus senilis (also called corneal arcus), and it's the most common aging change in the cornea. Arcus senilistypically is separated from the limbus b...

  2. In this article, we discuss everything about anatomy of cornea from its 6 layers i.e. epithelium, bowman's membrane, stroma, dua's layer, descemet's layer and endothelium; to important dimensions of cornea.

  3. Jan 1, 2014 · Cornea is an avascular, transparent tissue that is an important component of the ocular refractive system. It is one of the most densely innervated tissues in the body. It consists of five layers: epithelium, stroma, and endothelium and two interface layers...

    • Schematic cross-section of the human eye. Drawing by I. Helekal. Full size image. The cornea has about +43 dioptres and is the strongest lens of the eye.
    • Transverse section of the human cornea. The cornea is composed of six layers: the epithelium, the basement membrane, Bowman layer, the stroma with keratocytes whose density is higher in the anterior part of the cornea compared to the posterior part, Descemet membrane, and the endothelium.

    • Corneal stroma. Keratocytes are visualized by the detection of CD34 transmembrane sialomucin using indirect fluorescent immunohistochemistry (green fluorescent signal; the DNA is visualized by propidium iodide) and by enzymatic immunohistochemistry (counterstained with hematoxylin).
  4. Definition. The cornea is the projecting transparent part of the external tunic, and forms the anterior sixth of the surface of the bulb. It is almost circular in outline, occasionally a little broader in the transverse than in the vertical direction. It is convex anteriorly and projects like a dome in front of the sclera.
