    • Google Translate. “Hold on a second. Aren’t all Google services blocked in China?” Kind of, yes. However, you can download the Chinese-English text translation file whilst connected to the internet so you can use it offline when you’re out and about.
    • Baidu Translate. Baidu is China’s top search engine, so it only makes sense that they’ve thrown their own translation app into the mix. When you search for Baidu Translate in the app store, you might be put off by all of the Chinese.
    • Waygo. If you have trouble reading signs or menus in Chinese, an instant character translation app will come in very handy. I find these apps particularly useful in local Chinese restaurants as menus will rarely be in English.
    • Pleco. Pleco is my number one recommendation for a comprehensive Chinese dictionary and is an absolute must for any Mandarin Chinese learner. • Pleco. Pleco is the go-to app for Chinese learners, and it is a necessary addition to your app library if you will be visiting China anytime soon. The free version of Pleco that you download from the app store is essentially a dictionary.
    • Google Translate. Google Translate is easily the most accurate, comprehensive, and widely used of all the translation apps available. Google Translate offers voice and text translations into more than 50 languages and doesn’t require an internet connection.
    • Naver Papago Translate. Papago, a free Korean app with a slew of useful features, is a godsend for English speakers in China. This app provides text translation, voice translation, simultaneous conversation translation, image translation, and more, and doesn’t require any payment or in-app purchases to use.
    • WayGo. If you find yourself in a restaurant with a Chinese-only menu and are at a loss, WayGo is a great resource to have. All you do is point your smartphone camera at the text you want to translate and voila!
  6. Baidu Translate is solid all-around. Google Translate is the fastest/easiest. Google Lens is by far the fast/easiest for text from image translations.
