He inherited Pomerania-Wolgast-Rügen when his father died in 1326. He was one year old at the time. He shared a guardian with his brother Bogislaw V, Duke of Pomerania -Wolgast-Rügen. Emperor Charles IV granted Barnim IV Imperial immediacy in 1348.
After Wartislaw III died heirless in 1264, Barnim I became sole duke of the whole duchy. After Barnim's death, the duchy was to be ruled by his sons Barnim II, Otto I and Bogislaw IV. The first years, Bogislaw, being the eldest, ruled in place of his too young brothers.

BARNIM, the name of thirteen dukes who ruled over various divisions of the duchy of Pomerania. The following are the most important:— Barnim I. ( c. 1209–1278), called the Good, was the son of Bogislaus II., duke of Pomerania-Stettin, and succeeded to this duchy on his father’s death in 1220.
He was also known for his generous ecclesiastical foundations, and supported the extension of the secular reign of the Cammin bishops in the Kołobrzeg area. Duke Barnim died at the town of Dąbie ( Altdamm ), today part of Szczecin. The Minnesinger Meister Rumelant wrote a dirge in his honour.
