Sep 27, 2019 · Bertha was Charlemagne’s fifth child and third daughter (his first daughter had died in infancy), and the fourth born to him and Queen Hildegard. As is so often the case with the early medieval era, her actual year of birth is not recorded, nor is her place of birth, though it is likely that she was born in Francia.

Jan 14, 2018 · Bertrada of Laon. Bertrada of Laon (my 40x great grandmother, born between 710 and 727 – 12 July 783), also known as Bertrada the Younger or Bertha Broadfoot (cf. Latin: Regina pede aucae i.e. the queen with the goose-foot), was a Frankish queen. She was the wife of Pepin the Short and the mother of Charlemagne, Carloman and Gisela.
Bertha was the daughter of Charlemagne, king of the Franks (ruled 768–814). None of Charlemagne’s daughters married, perhaps because he hoped to avoid political competition from husbands. In any case, Bertha focused on scholarly pursuits. Her well-known affair with Angilbert, an official in her father’s court, produced two children.
