The Chattahoochee National Forest takes its name from the Chattahoochee River whose headwaters begin in the North Georgia mountains near Helen. The river and the area were given the name by the European settlers who took the name from the native people living here.
The Chattahoochee National Forest covers 18 north Georgia counties. It has five ranger districts, with two of them—the Tallulah and the Chattooga—being combined. It includes over 2,200 miles (3,500 km) of rivers and streams (including about 1,367 miles (2,200 km) of trout streams).
