Monroe was once the lands of the Lenepe Indians and the domain of the prehistoric Mastadont, ancient glaciers left behind a land perfect for settling and a river ideal for milling. The damming of the Ramapo and the construction of the grist mill in the mid 1700’s signaled the beginnings of permanent settlement and the establishment of a new town.

The Monroe Historical Society is a NY State chartered non profit organization dedicated to the preservation of our local heritage. The Monroe Historical Society was established in 1974 and state chartered in 1990. Meetings are held at 1465 Orange Turnpike on the second Saturday of each month at 9AM and focus on topics of local interest.
