  1. Mar 19, 2020 · I had trouble finding a hook for a critique of the excellent Coen Brother’s film, Miller’s Crossing. I read several reviews, even going so far as to read Roger Ebert’s pedestrian analysis. As to be expected, Ebert, who seemingly offers reviews from beyond the grave like a Dracula with press credentials, the piece was about him.

  2. Nov 23, 2020 · The cast of mobsters in the Coen brothers’ 1990 film “Miller’s Crossing” are most certainly human. Unless, of course, being human is a question of “friendship,” “character,” or ...

  4. Oct 16, 2020 · Even Roger Ebert (who gave it 3 stars) said, " This doesn't look like a gangster movie, it looks like a commercial intended to look like a gangster movie. Everything is too designed. That goes for the plot and the dialogue, too. The dialogue is well-written, but it is indeed written. We admire the prose rather than the message.

  5. Feb 9, 2022 · By Olivia Rutigliano. February 9, 2022. Miller’s Crossing, the Coen Brothers’ 1920s-era gangster ballad, is full of unbearable wetness—not simply because it is about Prohibition, but also because it is so often about liquid. It’s a film full of rain, tears, phlegm, vomit, blood.

A Roaring Twenties gangster saga that only the Coen brothers could concoct, Miller’s Crossing marries the hard-boiled sensibility of classic noir fiction with the filmmakers’ trademark savory dialogue, colorful characters, and finely calibrated set pieces. Gabriel Byrne brings a wry gravitas to the role of Tom Reagan, the quick-thinking right-hand ...

Joel and Ethan Coen’s 1990 noir Miller’s Crossingreceives a new Blu-ray edition from The Criterion Collection, presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 on a dual-layer disc with a 1080p/24hz high-definition encode. Sadly, Criterion appears to be simply reusing an older master, more than likely the same one Fox used for their own Blu-ray and...

Criterion includes the 5.1 remix presented in DTS-HD MA and not the original 4.0 soundtrack found on Fox’s DVD and Blu-ray editions. The good news is that this is not the same 5.1 remix that was alsofound on Fox’s Blu-ray, that remix missing a music cue close to the end of the film. That music cue has been restored here, though again, as mentioned ...

Where Criterion’s edition clearly upgrades over Fox’s previous editions is in the area of supplements. Criterion does port over some archival materialfrom the previous editions, specifically the promotional interviews filmed around the time of the film’s release with actors Gabriel Byrne, Marcia Gay Harden, John Turturro, and Jon Polito. Polito’s c...

The supplements are good and worth going through, but the presentation is unfortunately held back by a clearly dated master, more than likely the same one Fox used previously. BUY AT:

  7. Miller's Crossing Reviews. The violence, like the rest of Miller's Crossing, is poetically staged, and strangely tasteful. But the movie's real firepower is the staccato slang of its script. Full ...
