In 1867, Billroth was appointed Chair of the Department of Surgery at the University of Vienna by Emperor Franz Joseph I. Billroth performed the first successful esophagectomy in 1872 and the following year did the first total laryngectomy. He was the first surgeon to perform a subtotal colectomy.

Theodor Billroth (1829–1894; Figure), one of the most revered surgeons in the history of the surgery, serves as a model for the modern surgeon. Each year new Fellows of the American College of Surgeons enter a profession rocked with challenges never seen before.
Christian Theodor Billroth (1829-1894) earned a medical degree at Berlin University in 1852. He began his career with a junior surgical appointment in Berlin. In 1860, he was named Professor and Director of the Surgery Clinic in Zurich, and later went to Vienna where he accepted similar positions.
