Leaving the “esses,” a series of twisting bends, and preparing his car for a righthand turn, Cevert drove straight into the metal barrier on the left side of the course. The Tyrrell flipped over horizontally, became enmeshed in the guard rails and trapped the driver inside. It was believed that Cevert died instantly.
