     No I don't think that it's good practice to keep calling the API. And even in the google_directions_api documentation, they say,

     Note: This service is not designed to respond in real time to user input.

     And to answer your main question.. Don't call the API every time the location changes, instead call it once using the current location. And the response contains everything you need to navigate the user. Check the maneuver key inside each step of a leg.

     And you should only use the location subscription to update the current location and animate the camera on the map. Use the getLocation() method to get the current location before starting the trip and use that location to generate the route. Store that route in a variable and use the data inside the route response to display whatever you want.

     I've been looking for the same solution - If you are able to format the link in the following way this works:

     It would be good to figure out how to submit it from a standard HTML form though.

     After thoroughly reading through the react-google-maps documentation, examples, and issues I have come to learn that the package does not support a lot of the things I will need to do for my application.

     That being said, I have begun writing my own Google Maps API wrapper based off of the work done by Fullstack React. I've omitted a lot of the utilities used in the below mentioned as they can be found here or here.

     That being said my solution is to wrap the google maps container in a higher order component and expose the Map Object via the window object:

     I've implemented something very similar to your needs in my project recently. It's quite easy but it took me a while to realise how to do it.

     Basically, you can simply use the .getPlace() method on the Autocomplete object and go from there. Here's how I got the latitude and longitude:

     let locationInfo = autocomplete.getPlace().geometry.location;let latitude = locationInfo.lat();let longitude = locationInfo.lng();

     In your specific case you should change your showPositions function to

     function showPosition() {x.innerHTML = "Latitude: " + autocomplete.getPlace().geometry.location.lat + "<br>Longitude: " + autocomplete.getPlace().geometry.location.lng;

     }

     I don't really get why would you want to get specific div for marker? If you want to display tooltip then all you need is pixel position of markers anchor (and knowledge about size of marker and placement of anchor), not div element. You can always trigger opening and closing tooltip by hand when event occurs on google.maps side.

     For getting pixel position of anchor of given marker you can use this code:

     var scale = Math.pow(2, map.getZoom());var nw = new google.maps.LatLng( map.getBounds().getNorthEast().lat(), map.getBounds().getSouthWest().lng());var worldCoordinateNW = map.getProjection().fromLatLngToPoint(nw);var worldCoordinate = map.getProjection().fromLatLngToPoint(marker.getPosition());var pixelOffset = new google.maps.Point( Math.floor((worldCoordinate.x - worldCoordinateNW.x) * scale), Math.floor((worldCoordinate.y - worldCoordinateNW.y) * scale));

     In pixelDistance you get offset of specific marker anchor counted from left upper corner of the map (and you can get it's position from map.getDiv() div). Why it works like this (or is there a better way?) you can read in documentation of google maps overlays.

     You can now access your pixel coordinates through p.x and p.y.

     FOLLOWING ADDED POST COMMENT:

     The downfall of the overlay projection is that until it your map canvas finishes loading it isn't initialized. I have the following listener that will force whatever method I need to trigger when the map does finish loading.

     google.maps.event.addListener(map, 'idle', functionName());

     In the mean time I use the following check to avoid any errors before it does draw.

     One thing to remember when using MBO's code: When the map tiles are repeated, map.getBounds().getSouthWest() returns "-180" independent of the map's position. A fallback I'm using in this case is calculating the pixel distance to the center instead of the upper left corner, since map.getCenter() seems to return the currently centered point in any case. E.g. (using jQuery):

   Dedicated GPS devices include a GPS receiver and an offline map database they can use to display your location, provide directions, and allow you to search for locations. Your modern smartphone or tablet also has a GPS chip so it can determine its location offline -- all you need is an app that will provide offline map data and navigation directions.

   Google Maps allows you to download map data and view it offline. To do so, zoom to the area you want to cache in Google Maps and type "OK maps" into the search box. You can then open Google Maps and see where you are on the map -- the map will work fine even when you're offline. Unfortunately, Google Maps doesn't provide a way to get navigation directions offline. You can search for navigation directions before you leave Wi-Fi and continue using the cached navigation directions to get to your destination, but that's it.

   If you're looking for a free offline GPS navigation app for Android , try Osmand or Navfree. If you'd like something more full-featured and polished, you may want to buy a paid app like Sygic or one of the many other offline navigation apps in Google Play. Sure, they cost money -- but they're cheaper than buying a dedicated GPS device and having to pay for map updates.

   On iPhone or iPad, you can use Google Maps to save offline map data in the same way, but it still won't provide offline navigation. Apple Maps doesn't provide offline navigation instructions, either. You'll find a variety of offline navigation apps in the app store, like the paid Sygic and CoPilot GPS.

   On Windows Phone, Nokia's HERE Maps allows you to cache maps for offline use and even get navigation directions offline.
