The noted Conservative politician Sir Ian Gilmour was given a life peerage by John Major in 1992, becoming Baron Gilmour of Craigmillar, of Craigmillar in the District of the City of Edinburgh, of which his family were, for several hundred years, the feudal superiors.
He succeeded as 4th Baronet of Craigmillar on the death of his father in 1977. In 1992 he became a life peer, and was elevated the House of Lords as Baron Gilmour of Craigmillar. On 10 July 1951, Gilmour married Lady Caroline Margaret Montagu-Douglas-Scott, the youngest daughter of the 8th Duke of Buccleuch.
