An urban legend says from Bugs Bunny using it as an insult in the 40s/50s. The root seems to be the biblical Nimrod, a fearsome hunter. However, I found some old pre-1900 references to phallic insults, as in calling someone a dick or a tool. But I didn't find as much post 1900 to dig into.
