Irwin was one of four children born to James and Emma Kostal in a Czech enclave of Chicago. His siblings James, Jerome and Violet all remained in the Chicago area. [3]
In 1929, Kostal married his high school sweetheart, Sylvia Paryzek. They had three children, while Kostal worked as a musician in and around Chicago. In 1946, they moved to New York City. Kostal struggled to find work, but found work as a ghost-writer, orchestrating shows with limited runs on Broadway.
Irwin Kostal passed away on November 23, 1994, in Studio City, California, while serving as president of the American Society of Music Arrangers and Composers. Award-winning conductor and orchestrator who brought his innate musical genius to many Disney classic motion pictures such as Mary Poppins.
