As the latest film in the Shrek series, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish does not disapoint. In our review of the film, we even went as far as calling it "The Logan of the Shrek franchise." The movie follows Puss in Boots himself as he comes to the realization that he is officially on the last of his nine lives. With death on the hunt for him, he ends up on an epic journey to procure the Last Wish and get back to his legendary adventuring lifestyle. Like every Shrek movie in the timeline, the fairy tale references are on point and it's great fun for the whole family.

At this point, you might need a PHD to understand all of the characters that Vin Diesel’s Dominic Toretto considers ‘family’ across the action-packed Fast and Furious series. But thanks to the original film's addition to Peacock this summer, you can at least make a start on your studies. The Fast and the Furious (2001) is where it all started for the gang, and features the series’ key pillars of high-octane street racing and undercover cop intrigue, without a rocket car or nuclear threat in sight. Paul Walker plays Brian O'Conner, an officer whose investigations into the underworld of street racing and drug crime in Los Angeles get murky as he’s accepted into Toretto’s dangerous inner circle. As well as providing a fun history lesson, The Fast and Furious is an important throwback to the blockbuster series’ humble beginnings back when it was still a racing movie franchise.

As Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks proves, there are few greater pairings than Kyle MacLachlan and David Lynch. And, while Villeneuve’s modern take on Dune delivers sleek CGI and remarkable scale, this 80s classic is full of leather, quotable dialogue, awesome practical effects, and, perhaps most surprisingly, Geordie rock and roll legend Sting. In the tumultuous world of Arrakis, he who controls the spice (a powerful drug that enables space travel, supernatural aging and precognition abilities) controls the universe. Here we follow young messiah Paul Atreides as he comes to terms with an ancient prophecy and fights an evil galactic empire for the sake of his family and the universe at large. Lynch’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s famous fantasy book tells a broadly similar story to the 2021 version if you’ve caught it, but is a worthwhile alternative and a true visual feast with more lasers, surreal imagery and subversive Lynchian intrigue.

Based on a successful graphic novel, Nimona is Netflix’s next big animated feature set in a futuristic fantasy kingdom where knights rule the roost. In this unlikely hero’s tale, an assassination plot goes awry, and the only person who seems to be able to help is the film's protagonist and shapeshifting troublemaker, Nimona. With voice performances from Chloe Grace Moretz and Academy Award-winner Riz Ahmed, this twist on the classic animated fairytale features a refreshing 3D art style that moves a mile a minute. Overall it's a great addition to the list of the best Netflix movies.

Titanic and Terminator director James Cameron is back at it again, using some of the world's most impressive experimental technology to conjure the sequel story to his blockbuster 2009 passion project Avatar. The Way of Water takes place 16 years after protagonist Jake Sully has transferred his consciousness into a Na’vi body - and after some peacetime, he’s forced to seek solace and safety with the Metkavina clan in Pandora’s reef-covered east to escape the militant human invaders. This sci-fi sequel features some genuinely stunning aquatic action scenes and plenty of breathtaking, imaginative flora and fauna couched in the vibrant neon color palettes and rich environments the series is famous for.

The second installment in Edgar Wright's beloved Cornetto trilogy has made its way to Amazon Prime in all its comedic glory. Full of hilarious twists, turns, and plenty of endearing British-isms, this quirky crime story follows overly-efficient London police officer Nicholas Angel who, despite his intentions to take down violent criminals, is trans...

If the star power of Cate Blanchett alone isn’t enough of a selling point to see Tár, I’ll raise you 4 BAFTA Nominations and a Golden Globe. In an incisive inspection into power and control in the music industry, director, writer, and producer Todd Field questions the price of overwhelming renown in this controversial character study of an esteemed maestro.

Lost in Translation is one of Sofia Coppola’s best works and has kindly made its way to Peacock this June for your viewing pleasure. Featuring glorious cinematography of 00s Tokyo, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johanson find themselves as an unlikely romantic duo (an aging starlet and a young philosophy graduate) who, through a trying engagement, inspect their own lives and find solace in each other's struggles. Coppola masterfully sets up each scene, leaving room for the viewer to find their own meaning in each interaction whilst also showcasing some truly breathtaking shots of skylines, side streets and paraphernalia. This masterful romcom has earned its well-deserved cult status and is well worth spending an evening with. Just don’t forget the tissues.

With Dune: Part 2 right around the corner and boasting extra talent in the form of Austin Butler, Florence Pugh and more, now is a great time to get to grips with Denis Villeneuve’s visually-groundbreaking take on Frank Herbert’s world. Within a couple of hours, you’ll know your Bene Gesserit’s from your Shai-Hulud’s, and probably wonder why the main character is just called Paul. Following a regal family pulled into an ugly war by a monumental, manipulative evil, this pithy tale of intense emotions is an adventure you should share with your friends. With standout performances from Zendaya, Oscar Isaac, and Timothée Chalamet, Dune is a meaty feast for the eyes, and a worthy follow-up to Villeneuve’s last epic, Blade Runner 2049.
