JOHN I. (d. 1294), duke of Brabant and Lorraine, surnamed the Victorious, one of the most gifted and chivalrous princes of his time, was the second son of Duke Henry III. and Aleidis of Burgundy. In 1267 his elder brother Henry, being infirm of mind and body, was deposed in his favour.

The title was created by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in favor of Henry I of the House of Reginar , son of Godfrey III of Leuven (who was duke of Lower Lorraine at that time).
