Background. He was the eldest son of Henry Borwin II, Lord of Mecklenburg. Career. As the eldest son, he received the ancestral homeland. In 1227, he defeated the Danish in the Battle of Bornhöved, thereby relieving Mecklenburg from Danish suzerainty.
