John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum brings the title character back to his roots while also offering new twists to where things could go from here, all with the over-the-top, brutally executed action set-pieces fans have come to expect from the franchise. They will not leave disappointed.

Picking up moments after the end of John Wick: Chapter 2, Parabellum takes place over the course of a few very bloody, desperate days as John faces the proverbial music for breaking the rules of the High Table in the preceding film. His breathless journey to stay alive — and hopefully find a way to set things right with the High Table — will take him through dingy back alleys, arcane buildings, exotic overseas interludes, and finally back to ... well, you’ll see.

We learn much more of John’s backstory here, which reveals some interesting facets to his character, all while also seeing him take one helluva prolonged beating along the way. John Wick is a human piñata at this point and Chapter 3 gets a lot of traction out of seeing him punched, stabbed, kicked, shot, and tossed around. John Wick might be the toughest guy ever, not just because he can kill like no one else, but because he can take a beating and keep getting back up until he wins. He’s like the Rocky Balboa of vengeful hitmen.

Beyond the title character, John Wick: Chapter 3 also brings back fan faves like amoral Continental Hotel boss Winston (the always droll Ian McShane), the proud but pragmatic Bowery King (a scenery-chewing Laurence Fishburme), and the loyal, resolute Continental concierge Charon (Lance Reddick, who gets to be more badass than ever here), while also introducing several new characters who each make an impact in their own way.

The most notable of these new characters is Halle Berry’s Sofia, John’s past frenemy Berry delivers a crowd-pleasing turn marked by brutal efficiency in her action scenes and a world-weary reluctance in her seriocomic exchanges with Reeves. That said, this film is most definitely not a buddy pic as Berry is not in it as much as some might hope.

Meanwhile, Anjelica Huston joyfully embraces the inherently operatic, even campy nature of the Russian operative who knows John Wick far better than most (not that it means she loves him more than staying alive). Jerome Flynn (aka Game of Thrones’ Bronn) has a small but key role as does Wonder Woman’s Said Taghmaou as an enigmatic source John seeks out for help, but the biggest scene-stealer is Marc Dacascos as Zero, the main assassin in Chapter 3. John Wick has become such an underworld legend that he has fans, Zero among them, which lends Dacascos’ scenes some refreshing moments of levity amidst all the carnage.

All of these newcomers up the ante in the action and lore-building departments as John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum aims to shed new light on who John Wick the man is even as the film established new dilemmas for the franchise to explore down the line.

Chock full of inventive set-pieces and brutal kills, while also providing new facets to the intricate underworld lore fans of the franchise have come to enjoy, John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum pushes its title character to his breaking point and back while offering fresh information about his backstory. The action is bloody and over-the-top and th...
