Juan del Encina (born July 12, 1468?, Encinas?, near Salamanca, Castile—died near the end of August 1529/30, León?, Spain) was a playwright, poet, priest, and composer of secular vocal music, who was the first Spanish dramatist to write specifically for performance.

Full biography Juan del Encina. Juan del Encina was a celebrated Renaissance composer, poet, playwright, and priest from Spain. He was born on July 12, 1468, and is regarded as the founder of Spanish drama, having written some of the earliest known dramatic works in the Spanish language.

Archdeacon of Málaga 1510–12, in Rome 1512–19, then prior of Léon from 1519. Wrote several eclogues (pastoral plays) and a large number of songs for 3 or 4 vv.

The main source of his music is the "Cancionero Musical de Palacio" mentioned above, but it is not the only one. The following also contain works by him: Cancionero Musical de Segovia (circa 1500?)
