If an italian listens to a conversation in sicilian, it might be that it'd sound unintelligible, but on the other hand knowing also sicilian, the italian/latin origin of most words and phrasing is recognizable. In conclusion, I would strongly recommend to first learn italian to a decent level and only then dive into dialects. P.S.:
