Piaf was born Édith Giovanna Gassion in Belleville, Paris on Decmber 19, 1915. Édith’s father, Louis-Alphonse Gassion, was a street acrobat. Her mother, Annetta Giovanna Maillard, was an Italian cafe singer, who performed under the name “Line Marsa.” Edith gave birth to a daughter at the age of 17. She did not marry the father.
