The northern section, Lower Nubia, stretches southward from the First to the Third Cataracts. It is basically an extension of Egypt, in that it is formed of a long, irrigated ribbon of fertile farmland lying in the fertile floodplain of the Nile. To east and west of this ribbon is dry desert.
