May 9, 2017 · Duchamp, wanting to submit an artwork to the “unjuried” Society of Independent Artists’ salon in New York—which claimed that they would accept any work of art, so long as the artist paid the application fee—presented an upside-down urinal signed and dated with the appellation “R. Mutt, 1917,” and titled Fountain.
Fountain is a readymade sculpture by Marcel Duchamp in 1917, consisting of a porcelain urinal signed "R. Mutt". In April 1917, an ordinary piece of plumbing chosen by Duchamp was submitted for the inaugural exhibition of the Society of Independent Artists, to be staged at the Grand Central Palace in New York.

The piece caused mass-controversy as its title denoted a signification orchestrated by the artist that America’s worth equated to that of a gold toilet.

In one of his messages, he attributes the work to his girlfriend, who sent him a urinal under the male pseudonym “R. Matt.” But it must be remembered that the first thing Duchamp took the urinal, turned it over, signed “R. Matt” and sent to the salon.
