Once the site of a grand 110-room mansion designed by Julia Morgan for William Randolph Hearst and his companion, actress Marion Davies, the property was a hot spot on Santa Monica’s Gold Coast where Hollywood celebrities came to enjoy the sun, the sea and fabulous parties at the Davies estate.
When not holding court at San Simeon, Hearst and Davies resided at Marion's equally luxurious beach house in Santa Monica, at Hearst's rustic Wyntoon estate in Northern California, and St Donat's Castle in Wales.
Hearst decided to keep the Hollywood connection and had a beach house built for his mistress, the famous silent film star Marion Davies. This wasn't just any beach house, however; this was to be the grandest property out of all the other homes on the Gold Coast.
