Martin Arnold Schmidt (born January 1960) is the 19th President of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Prior to this role, Schmidt was provost at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) from 2014 to 2022.
His teaching and research is in the areas of micro and nanofabrication of sensors, actuators and electronic devices, microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), design of micromechanical sensors and actuators, and micro/nanofabrication technology.
Dr. Schmidt, currently Provost at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will assume office at the nation’s oldest and one of the world’s most renowned technological research universities on July 1, 2022.
