Schmidt received his B.S. degree from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1981 and his S.M. and Ph.D. degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983 and 1988, respectively. He joined the MIT faculty in 1988 in the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department.
