Warning: Full spoilers for the episode The Punisher Season 2 Episode 13 below. If you need a refresher on where we left off, check out our review of Season 2, Episode 12.

That's a wrap on The Punisher Season 2. And most likely the series as a whole, for that matter. This episode wraps up everything about as well as can be expected given the rocky road the season has taken of late. Most importantly, it brings the story of Frank Castle to a satisfying conclusion.

Easily the most surprising thing about the finale is the decision to shift the plot very much back towards John Pilgrim and the Schultzes. That was always going to yield messy results. The Schultzes in particular have never been given the attention they needed this season. Even here at the end, they felt more like minor footnotes in the Season 2 narrative rather than the ultimate targets in a hard-fought war. That really worked against the final encounter between Frank and the Schultzes. Whatever sense of satisfaction in seeing two profoundly evil people given vigilante justice was fleeting, at best.

As for Billy, I actually quite liked the anticlimactic way his story was brought to a close. No grand, final showdown with Frank. No epic shootout. No waxing poetic about days long gone. Just a sad, lonely man dying alone in a basement, and an enemy come to finish the job he started in the Season 1 finale. As Dinah said, Billy was dead the moment she shot him three times. The rest was a foregone conclusion.

The finale also managed to tie up the Frank/Amy relationship on a strong note. Up until now, I never felt like this season has fully succeeded in selling the idea that Frank sees an echo of his own daughter in Amy. But in the end, I think it did. The tearful farewell in the bus station proved surprisingly touching. You really get a sense of the scope of their relationship in that scene. Amy was truly saved by this random stranger who just happened to wander in her life, and Frank got to atone for failing to protect his own daughter.

In the end, we finally see Frank make that final jump towards becoming the Punisher of the comics. Throughout Daredevil Season 2 and The Punisher Season 1, Frank was a man driven by a singular purpose - to get revenge on every single person responsible for the murder of his family. Season 2 started out by exploring whether it's possible for Frank to move beyond that war and find peace.

The ultimate takeaway here is, no, not really. Frank could have followed Amy's example. He could have packed up, moved out and resumed his cross-country wandering. But he's finally given up that pretense and accepted that gunning down criminals is his life's true calling. This ends the season on a bittersweet note. Frank found his peace, in a way, but only by embracing his inner killer and sacrificing any remaining chance at a normal life forever.

The Punisher Season 2 never fully lived up to its potential, both because of an awkwardly divided storyline and the momentum-draining plot twist in Episode 10. Fortunately, the season manages to end in strong form in "The Whirlwind." This episode brings ample closure for most characters and completes Frank Castle's journey in the Netflix marvel Uni...
