Jun 30, 2011 · Madame Ranevskaya is a spoiled, aging aristocratic lady who returns from a trip to Paris to face the loss of her magnificent Cherry Orchard estate after a default on the mortgage. In denial, she continues living in the past, deluding herself and her family, while the beautiful cherry trees are being axed down by the re-possessor Lopakhin, her former serf, who has his own agenda.
Anton Chekhov's last play 'The Cherry Orchard' is one of his best. Other favourites being 'Three Sisters' and 'Uncle Vanya'. It is a masterclass of complex characterisation and mood, while Chekhov's characters were not what one considers "likeable" they are complex and real and he was a master at creating vivid atmosphere.
In so doing, they put up their lives to auction and seal the fate of the beloved orchard. Anton Chekhov’s The Cherry Orchard will be directed by NT Associate Director Howard Davies in a version by Andrew Upton, whose recent productions of Russian plays (including PHILISTINES and THE WHITE GUARD) have earned huge critical acclaim.
