According to the 13th Amendment to the Constitution in 1987 and the 16th Amendment to the Constitution in 1988, both languages of Sinhala and Tamil became the Official Languages in Sri Lanka and English language as the link language. The Department of Official Languages is responsible for providing such facilities.
In November 2019 the implementation of the Official Languages Policy (OLP) moved to the Ministry of Public Administration, Home Affairs, Provincial and Local Government. In September 2020,the implementation of OLP came under Ministry of Public Service, Provincial Councils and Local Government.
