The Most Honourable Order of the Bath is a British order of chivalry founded by King George I on 18 May 1725. Recipients of the Order are usually senior military officers or senior civil servants , and the monarch awards it on the advice of His Majesty's Government.
These three classes of the Order of the Bath recognize different levels of achievement and service to the British Crown. The Officers of the Order of the Bath would like to encourage Members to attend events hosted by the Order such as: The annual "Bath at Home" event in the grounds of Westminster Abbey. A Service which includes the Ceremony of the Oath and Installation of Knights and Dames Grand Cross of the Order held at Westminster Abbey held every four years.
It is the fourth most senior order of merit in Britain, after the Orders of the Garter, the Thistle, and of St. Patrick (which is a dormant order). The title of the Order comes from medieval days, when soldiers were prepared to receive their knighthood by a ritualised process of washing, which symbolised spiritual purification.
