Pope Clement XII (Latin: Clemens XII; Italian: Clemente XII; 7 April 1652 – 6 February 1740), born Lorenzo Corsini, was head of the Catholic Church and ruler of the Papal States from 12 July 1730 to his death in February 1740. Clement presided over the growth of a surplus in the papal finances.
Pope Clement XI condemned the Chinese rites and Confucian rituals, and outlawed any further discussion in 1704, with the anti-rites decree Cum Deus optimus of 20 November 1704. It forbade the use of " Tian " and " Shangdi ", while approving " Tianzhu " ('Lord of Heaven').

Delivered before the Sacred College of Cardinals the oration for the funeral of Pope Innocent XIII in 1724; and in March 1730, the oration De eligendo Pontifice for the election of the new Pontiff Clement XII; both were published in Rome. Consistorial lawyer and tutor of the pope's nephew, 1726.
In token of gratitude to his benefactor, Clement XI, and as a pledge that he would make that great pontiff his model, he assumed the title of Clement XII. Unfortunately he lacked the important qualities of youth and physical strength.
