Aug 17, 2011 · OSU’s 13 Presidents have lived in only five different residences since the University opened in 1873. Rickley House, 1892. The first University Residence, known as the Rickley House, had a total of 18 rooms (five bedrooms) and was nearly 7,200 square feet.
- William Henry Harrison, 9th President. Served: 1841. Harrison was born in 1773 in Virginia – Virginia claims him as one of their eight presidents, too – and he settled in the Northwest Territory after fighting alongside Anthony Wayne in the Battle of Fallen Timbers.
- Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President. Served: 1869-1877. Grant, born in 1822, lived for just one year in the Ohio River town of Point Pleasant. His family moved to nearby Georgetown in 1823.
- Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President. Served: 1877-1881. Hayes, born in Delaware, Ohio in 1822, was a lawyer, Army general, congressman and governor of Ohio before getting elected to the presidency in 1876 – in one of the most controversial elections in U.S. history.
- James A. Garfield, 20th President. Served: 1881. The last of the log-cabin presidents, Garfield was born in Orange Township (modern-day Moreland Hills), just east of Cleveland in 1831.
- William Henry Harrison: 9th U.S. President. After being promoted to Major General of the U.S. Army in the War of 1812, William Henry Harrison lived a private life in Ohio before being elected president in 1840.
- Ulysses S. Grant: 18th U.S. President. Known for his military genius during the Civil War, Grant was also historically well-known for his progressive approach in the Reconstruction Era of the United States.
- Rutherford B. Hayes: 19th U.S. President. Before being elected President in 1876, Hayes was a lawyer, vocal abolitionist, member of congress and Governor of Ohio.
- Benjamin Harrison: 23rd U.S. President. Benjamin Harrison, a North Bend native, comes from a long line of influential Americans. His great grandfather and namesake was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and his grandfather, William Henry Harrison, was the ninth president of the United States.
