The "Prince Valiant" haircut, a variant of the pageboy resembling Val's, was once popular, particularly for children. Harvey Kurtzman and Wally Wood satirized the strip with Prince Violent in Mad #13 (July 1954), which ends in Violent losing his page-boy haircut to "the fair maid Alota" in the best of all causes.
The latter instance inspired the pageboy's sometime nickname of "the Prince Valiant" or "Prince Valiant cut". The character of Willy Wonka as played by Johnny Depp in the film version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory wore this hairstyle.

- THE STRIP WAS SURPRISINGLY CONTEMPORARY. Though Prince Valiant never adopted a more current hairstyle, his creator did factor in the state of the world.
