Aug 28, 2023 · Introduced as an athletics mascot, Alli arrived on campus in 1931 and became a beloved fixture at campus events. Suggested alternatives for the school mascot included the golden panthers, owls and seals, but none of those stuck.

Graduates of the program have gone on to earn doctoral degrees at prestigious schools such as UCLA, UC Berkeley, Harvard, Glasgow University, Concordia University, UT Austin, Indiana University, University of Iowa, and UC Santa Barbara, among others. Some hold tenure-track positions at universities around the world.
Graduates have secured successful careers as managers of local and regional media arts organizations, curators at art museums and film festivals, and as media archivists and librarians.
Graduates have found work in the entertainment and digital media industries, holding positions as journalists and reviewers, studio archivists, audience analysts, producers, and creative executives, among others.

The truth is, there is no connection between SF State mascot and an actual alligator. Originally, the "Golden Gater" was elected as the school's original mascot because San Francisco was known as the city of the Golden Gate Bridge.

School of Cinema facilities include a 150-seat screening theatre, a 2500 square foot shooting stage, editing and post-production areas for both sprocket and digital media, sound recording and mixing studios with digital editing workstations, including a Foley stage.
