    Last year, Eddie Redmayne delivered an Academy Award-winning performance in the Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything. There, he offered an outstanding portrayal of Hawking in a solid movie about the scientist. Redmayne may now have done one better with his performance in a film which is otherwise not quite as good.

    In Tom Hooper's The Danish Girl we find the actor playing a married, successful, painter and the Danish girl of the title, Lili Elbe, who was born as Einar Wegener. Alicia Vikander is Gerda, Einar's wife. Also a painter, Gerda is a rather less successful one. That difference in professional status, however, doesn't affect their deep love for one another and they live, seemingly happily, in 1920s Copenhagen.

    As may be clear from the previous paragraph, that love is going to be tested in The Danish Girl. Lili is coming to grips with the fact that she knows herself to be a woman, not a man.

    It is natural to feel trepidation about that which is different, that which is unknown. The important thing is not the feeling, but the reaction to it. That is what Vikander and Redmayne explore here in The Danish Girl – their characters' reactions to something seen at the time as very different.
