A medical specialization allows a doctor to focus their education and care on a specific group of patients, diagnoses, technologies or skills. Specialization is an important part of a hospital because it allows staff to provide patients with advanced care for their needs. Choosing a specialization may allow you to further progress your career through the doctor hierarchy, which hospitals use to define the various physician designations. Popular medical specializations and their area of expertise include:
•Cardiology: Monitoring a patient's health as it relates to their cardiovascular system
•Dermatology: Treating conditions related to the skin, hair and nails
•Endocrinology: Performing tests related to a patient's endocrine system and treating related conditions

Resident
Once a student graduates from medical school, they enter a residency. The first year of a residency is called an internship. An intern provides basic medical care under the direct supervision of a senior member of the medical staff. They receive both practical and clinical education from medical professionals. Following the internship, residents begin to learn more about and practice in their specialization.Residencies could last anywhere from two to seven years, depending on the program. Some facilities might further categorize residents into junior and senior residents in longer programs.
Chief resident
A chief resident is an advanced senior resident position usually available after you complete three years of residency. A chief oversees the other residents at a hospital and creates schedules, performs evaluations and provides mentorship, among other tasks. Although serving in an advisory role for other residents, the chief resident still receives further education and mentorship from attending physicians and senior staff.
Fellow
A fellowship is an opportunity for a doctor to pursue an advanced specialization or focus on a specific area of patient care. Although not all doctors enter a fellowship, it can provide targeted education and training to allow for advanced practice. Fellows are fully credentialed doctors and may provide unsupervised care for patients. Often, a fellowship involves working closely with a more experienced doctor leading the fellowship opportunity.
Start early
You may be able to find more opportunities for career advancement if you start preparing to be a doctor early in your education. Studying pre-medicine in your undergraduate program, getting a high score on the Medical College Admission Test and submitting compassionate medical school applications can increase your chances of being admitted into your ideal medical school.
