Description. This unsigned armour is of the ‘body-wrapped’ ( dōmaru) type introduced in the late Kamakura period (1185–1333). Thanks to its relative lightness, the style soon became popular with higher-ranking samurai.
It emerged in the 11th century as a tighter-fitting torso armor that wrapped around the body in a form called haramaki, or belly band, which tied around the side. It was used by lower-class samurai and ashigaru, or soldiers, who largely fought on foot and could not afford the more expensive ō-yoroi.
A yoroi is a cavalry armor worn by samurai comprising in its basic form a kabuto (helmet), dō (cuirass) with kusazuri (multipart skirt pendant), and sode (shoulder guards).
The classic Japanese armour, the heavy, square, boxy suit, is now called ō-yoroi (大鎧・“great armour”) although it was originally just called yoroi. The oldest extant ō-yoroi is today just boards made of scales laced together. In other words, it is no longer a solid, wearable piece of armour.
Samurai of the Nambokucho era (1336-1392): samurai on the left in traditional o-yoroi armor; the samurai in the center - in d-maru ("around the body") armor with gyoyo breastplates; the samurai on the right is also dressed in a dô-maru, and on his head he has an eboshi hat - a samurai headdress that they wore instead of a comforter
