- Peale, Staircase Group. The cornerstone of the museum’s American collection arrived In 1945, when the museum purchased Charles Willson Peale’s famous trompe l’oeil painting The Staircase Group.
- Thomas Eakins, The Gross Clinic. Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic is among the greatest American paintings ever made. It depicts a dramatic surgical scene in a lecture room at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia.
- Pablo Picasso, The Three Musicians. Three Musicians is a large canvas painted by the most famous painter of the 20th century, Pablo Picasso. It was the grand finale of his Cubism period and part of a series he completed in 1921.
