Mississippi County is the easternmost county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of the 2020 census, the population was 40,685. There are two county seats, Blytheville and Osceola. The county is named for the Mississippi River which borders the county to the east. Mississippi County is part of the First Congressional District in Arkansas.

At the time, this point on the Mississippi was known as Bruinsburg, where boats could pull into a landing to load cotton from the surrounding plantations. During the first half of the 1800s, 44,000 bales of cotton per day could be loaded onto Mississippi riverboats from Bruinsburg and surrounding landings like Rodney and Port Gibson.

Graball Landing is located across from where the Black Bayou meets the Tallahatchie River. In 1840, the land around Graball Landing was cleared by 35 enslaved people for farming on the Cullen McMullen Place Plantation. It became a steamboat landing until a tornado in 1894 destroyed much of the area.
The site became known as “Hill’s Landing.” In the 1860’s a Jewish immigrant from Germany, Leopold Marks, migrated to Mississippi and sold dry goods as a foot peddler in the thinly settled area between Marks and Friars Point on the Mississippi River. His financial success was remarkable allowing him to purchase the Thomas B. Hill properties.
