Track geometry is concerned with the properties and relations of points, lines, curves, and surfaces [1] in the three-dimensional positioning of railroad track. The term is also applied to measurements used in design, construction and maintenance of track.
In the United States, the federal safety standards for rail gauge (distance between two rails) is 4 feet, 8.5 inches, but that is far from the only measurement you’ll find necessary to the rail. Gauges must also be used to determine rail wear and to ensure rail is safe to travel, and up to standard.
