Apr 25, 2022 · Updated Apr 25, 2022. Zion is one of the most important places that the Bible describes. But is it merely just a place or does it have more significance in the life of our Savior? We first encounter the word Zion in 2 Samuel 5:7, as it is written, “David took the stronghold of Zion, that is, the city of David.”
The Lord counseled Joseph Smith on this matter in these words: “The keys are to be delivered, the spirit of Elijah is to come, the Gospel to be established, the Saints of God gathered, Zion built up, and the Saints to come up as saviors on Mount Zion. But how are they to become saviors on Mount Zion?
The term Mount Zion has been used in the Hebrew Bible first for the City of David (2 Samuel 5:7, 1 Chronicles 11:5; 1 Kings 8:1, 2 Chronicles 5:2) and later for the Temple Mount, but its meaning has shifted and it is now used as the name of ancient Jerusalem's Western Hill.
