I visited Łodz about 6 years ago and I remember people telling me the city was in the process of a major regeneration thanks to some wealthy benefactor. I heard this from basically some guy in the street so I don't know how valid it is, but he told me it was unrecognisable 10 years prior to my visit and would be unrecognisable again in 10 years.
